Grucot methenamine silver (GMS) is a specialized chemiluminescent histological stain used to detect fungi, as well as certain types of mycobacteria (such as Nocardia) and parasites (such as Pneumocystis jirovecii). The technique relies on the reduction of silver salts by the sugar-rich (such as glucan and mannan) cell walls of fungi, resulting in the deposition of metallic silver and its characteristic dark color against a light green background.
