Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose irreversibly bound to it (glycation). Since red blood cells have a lifespan of approximately 120 days (3–4 months), this test reflects the average blood glucose level over that period. It is a key diagnostic criterion for diabetes and prediabetes, and an essential tool for monitoring long-term disease control.
