Fasciola hepatica serology (IHA) is a specific serological immunoassay that uses antigens extracted from the Fasciola parasite to detect the presence of antibodies (usually IgG) against this parasite in blood serum. Serological testing (such as IHA or ELISA) is the primary diagnostic tool outside the acute phase of the disease, as direct diagnosis (by observing eggs in stool) depends on the stage of the disease and may be negative in the early weeks or in mild infections.
