Anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (AGAD) antibodies are a quantitative or qualitative measure of autoantibodies directed against the enzyme GAD, which is found in pancreatic beta cells and the nervous system. These antibodies are one of the most important serological markers indicating an autoimmune process that targets and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading to type 1 (autoimmune) diabetes. They are also associated with certain neurological disorders.
