A preliminary microscopic examination of a random (non-first-morning) urine sample is performed. After centrifugation, the urine sediment is placed on a microscope slide with a drop of saline solution and examined under a light-field microscope. The examination aims to qualitatively and semi-quantitatively evaluate the components of the sediment, including white blood cell (WBC) count, red blood cell (RBC) count, epithelial cells, bacteria, yeast, crystals, and casts.
