Histological examination of a skin biopsy involves more than just routine staining (hematoxylin and eosin - H&E). It is supplemented with specialized histological stains applied to the slides to characterize specific components. Common examples include PAS or GMS staining for fungi, Fite or ZN staining for acid-fast bacteria, Congo Red staining for amyloidosis, or connective tissue stains (such as Trichrome). The aim of this examination is to confirm or rule out specific diagnoses that are not clearly visible with H&E.
