Neurofilament immunohistochemistry (NF) aims to detect the three intermediate filament proteins (NF-L, NF-M, and NF-H) that form the cytoskeleton of axons and dendrites in neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is a highly specific and sensitive marker of neural differentiation and is used to confirm the neural origin of cells in tumors and to assess axonal damage or integrity.
