A serum aldosterone test is a quantitative measurement of the level of the hormone aldosterone in the blood. Aldosterone is secreted from the zona granulosus of the adrenal cortex and is a major mineralocorticoid hormone. It acts primarily on the distal renal tubules to increase sodium and water reabsorption (thus increasing blood volume and pressure) and to increase potassium and hydrogen excretion in the urine. Its main regulation is via the renin-angiotensin system.
