Serum Acetone Level Test - Serum Acetone Test

This test measures the concentration of acetone, one of the three main ketone bodies, in blood serum. Acetone is produced as a result of the intensive breakdown of fats to use as an energy source when glucose is scarce or cells are unable to use it (as in insulin deficiency). Elevated acetone levels indicate a pathological state of ketosis, most notably diabetic ketoacidosis.
