This test measures the concentration of cobalamin (vitamin B12) in the serum. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin essential for two vital functions: 1) Hematopoiesis (it forms healthy red blood cells with folic acid and prevents megaloblastic anemia). 2) Nervous system health (it contributes to the formation and maintenance of the myelin sheath around nerves). The body does not produce it, and it must be obtained from animal-based foods (meat, fish, eggs, dairy). Its absorption requires intrinsic factor in the stomach. The serum level reflects the balance between intake, absorption, and utilization.
