Immunohistochemical (IHC) assays reveal the expression of SOX10 (SRY-Box Transcription Factor 10), a crucial nuclear transcription factor in the development and survival of neural crest-derived cells. SOX10 is a sensitive and specific marker for melanocytes (skin) and schwannocytes (peripheral neural sheath). It is primarily used as an excellent adjunct marker in the diagnosis of malignant melanomas and peripheral neural sheath tumors (such as schwannoma), and in differentiating them from other tumors.
