Immunohistochemical (IHC) assays detect the expression of uroplakin proteins, a family of integral membrane proteins specific to transitional (epithelial) cells exclusive to the urinary tract. They are found primarily in the surface epithelial cells of the bladder and ureters. Uroplakin, particularly UPIII, is a highly specific histological marker for transitional cell tumors (TCC) and for confirming the urinary origin of cancer cells in metastases or tumors of unknown origin.
