Immunohistochemical (IHC) assays detect the expression of smooth muscle actin (SMA), a fine-filament component of the cell structure in smooth muscle and muscle-forming cells. SMA is a highly sensitive cytoplasmic marker for smooth muscle cells. It is routinely used to confirm the smooth muscle nature of cells in a variety of tumors and conditions, such as leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma, as well as to detect myofibroblasts in wound healing processes and fibroblasts.
