High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is measured in blood serum. It is referred to as "good" cholesterol because it transports excess cholesterol from tissues and blood vessels to the liver for metabolism and elimination from the body—a process known as reverse cholesterol transport. HDL-C levels are considered an independent protective indicator of coronary heart disease.
