Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) analysis typically measures the concentration of this type of lipoprotein in the blood. VLDL is produced in the liver and primarily transports triglycerides from the liver to peripheral tissues for storage or use as energy. As its triglyceride content is emptied, VLDL gradually converts to low-density lipoprotein (LDL – “bad” cholesterol). Its level is often estimated by dividing the triglyceride level by 5 (assuming that most of the triglycerides in a fasting bloodstream are in VLDL).
