Direct Bilirubin Test

Measurement of direct (conjugated) bilirubin concentration in serum. This is the type that liver cells have processed and conjugated with glucuronic acid, making it water-soluble for excretion in bile. Its levels rise mainly when there is dysfunction in bile excretion from liver (cholestasis) or damage to liver cells themselves.
