The hepatitis B virus (HBc) IgM antibody test is a highly specific serological immunoassay that measures the presence of immunoglobulin M antibodies directed against the hepatitis B virus (HBV) core antigen. This antibody is the first to appear in the blood after an acute viral infection, typically appearing around the onset of symptoms or shortly before, peaking, and then declining over a period of about six months. Its presence is the most accurate indicator of a recent or active acute infection.
