The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) IgM viral capsid antibody (EBV VCA IgM) test is a serological immunoassay that measures the level of immunoglobulin M antibodies directed against viral capsid antigens (VCA). This antibody appears very early in acute EBV infection, indicating a recent or active primary infection, and typically peaks and then disappears within 4–6 weeks.
