A serological test detects and measures the titer of autoantibodies directed against thyroid peroxidase (TPO), an essential enzyme in the thyroid gland responsible for producing the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Elevated TPO antibodies are a hallmark of autoimmune thyroid diseases, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis (autoimmune hypothyroidism) and Graves' disease (autoimmune hyperthyroidism).
