Two separate serological tests are used to detect and quantify immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies directed against Legionella pneumophila, the main causative agent of Legionnaires' disease. These tests are used to diagnose atypical pneumonia, particularly when direct methods of detecting the bacteria (such as sputum culture or urine antigen testing) are unavailable or negative.
