Lipase analysis measures the level of this digestive enzyme in the blood serum. It is primarily produced by the alveolar cells of the pancreas, and its function is to break down dietary fats (triglycerides) into fatty acids and glycerol. When inflammation or damage occurs in the pancreas (as in acute pancreatitis), lipase leaks in large quantities into the bloodstream. It is considered more specific and accurate than amylase in diagnosing pancreatic diseases because it remains elevated for a longer period and is less affected by non-pancreatic causes.
