The serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) test, formerly known as SGPT, measures the intracellular level of this enzyme. It is found in very high concentrations in the cytoplasm of liver cells and in very small amounts in the kidneys, heart, and muscles. It is considered the most specific liver enzyme, as its blood levels rise primarily when there is necrosis or damage to liver cells, making it a cornerstone in the diagnosis and monitoring of liver diseases.
