This laboratory test measures the concentration of the cytokine interleukin-2 (IL-2) in blood serum. IL-2 is known as a "T-cell growth factor" because it is produced by and plays a key role in the proliferation and differentiation of activated T cells. It is also essential for the development and activity of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which suppress autoimmunity. This test is used to assess the function and regulation of the cellular immune system in immunodeficiency, autoimmune diseases, and to monitor the effectiveness of certain immunotherapies (such as recombinant IL-2 therapy).
